Fr. Al has recently moved to Providence from Phoenix, Arizona, where he was the Assisting Priest at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Tempe and is enjoying the change in climate. He was ordained in the Church of England and served in parish ministry in London as well as time as Chaplain at London Guildhall University and Director of Spiritual and Pastoral Care at Homerton University Hospital in Hackney, London. He is also a psychotherapist and was Director of Counseling Training at City and Islington College in London as well as maintaining a private practice. In 2008, he returned to the United States to Phoenix in order to be nearer to his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Kevin Topper, and his granddaughter Claire. He holds an undergraduate degree from San Jose State University and an M.A. from Santa Clara University. Prior to ordination, Fr. Al taught English and Journalism in secondary school on the coast of California. He trained for ministry at Cranmer Hall, St. John’s College, University of Durham, U.K., where the current Archbishop of Canterbury also trained.
Fr. Al lives with his spouse on the Eastside of Providence just off Benefit Street. His newest hobby is gardening; a hobby of necessity as his new house came with a mature garden. When he is not in the garden his free time is spend restoring the interior shutters in his very old house. He enjoys his dog, Charlie Girl, a tri-color Cocker Spaniel; cooking; films; painting icons and reading as well a spending time with family and friends who all love coming to Providence and New England.
